Protection Analysis
Device options

Two devices. Neither one costs you anything.

The device comes at no out-of-pocket expense either way — what you pay monthly is the monitoring. So the only real question is which one the person will actually wear.

The six things that actually matter are identical. Monitoring, fall detection, GPS, speaking through the device, water resistance and nationwide coverage are on both. The watch adds health and reminder features on top — it doesn’t protect anyone better.

How to actually choose

The right answer is whichever one gets worn every day. A device in a drawer protects nobody.

Choose the smartwatch if…

  • They already wear a watch, or would happily start
  • They’d rather it didn’t look like a medical device
  • Medication timing is something you worry about
  • They’re still active and the health tracking would get used
  • They’re comfortable charging something each day

Choose the fob if…

  • They’ve never worn a watch and won’t start now
  • Anything with a screen would go unused
  • They’d rather clip it to a belt or keep it in a pocket
  • Simple matters more than clever — one button, nothing to learn
  • Arthritis or dexterity makes a small wrist device awkward

What Product Protection covers

It’s the only optional part, and it’s worth understanding before you decide.

For $5 a month on either device, Product Protection covers replacement and expedited shipping if the device is lost, damaged, or stops working. Without it, the monitoring is identical — you’d simply be responsible for the device if something happens to it.

Worth taking if the person is hard on things, prone to misplacing them, or if a gap of several days without a working device would worry you. Worth skipping if they’re careful and you’d rather keep the monthly cost at its lowest.

Switchable

If the one you picked isn’t being worn, that’s worth a conversation rather than a drawer.

Still not sure which one?

That’s the normal answer, and it’s a two-minute conversation rather than a research project. Tell us how they live and we’ll tell you which one gets worn.
